Tensions between nuclear-armed rivals India and Pakistan surged today after the Pakistan Air Force shot down two Indian fighter jets, reportedly in retaliation for Indian airstrikes conducted earlier. The Indian jets were intercepted near the Line of Control following what Pakistan described as hostile airspace violations.
India had launched long-range missile strikes overnight, claiming to target alleged terrorist camps inside Pakistani territory in what it has called “Operation Sindoor.” The attacks hit at least five locations, including Muzaffarabad, Bahawalpur, and Kotli. Pakistani military spokesperson Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif confirmed strikes across several cities but reported no immediate military casualties. However, multiple civilian deaths, including children, have been reported in the aftermath of the Indian strikes.

In response, both countries have heightened military readiness, mobilizing troops, jets, and armored units along the border. Major cities are on alert, and parts of the airspace over northern India and eastern Pakistan have been restricted.
While India insists its aircraft did not cross into Pakistani territory and used precision missiles from its own side, Pakistan maintains that the airspace was violated. As civilians flee from border areas fearing further conflict, global powers including the UN, US, China, and EU have urged immediate de-escalation, warning of dire consequences if the situation worsens.
