Lahore – Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Ahmad Khan on Monday defended his role and authority during a press conference in Lahore.
The PA Speaker responded to recent protests by opposition members. He rejected claims that he exceeded his powers by sending references to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP).
Malik Ahmad Khan said that past examples support his actions. He reminded reporters that during the disqualification of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, opposition parties demanded similar steps.
“The Speaker has the authority to act under the rules,” he stated. “This power has been used in the past too.”
He stressed that his role is neutral and that he listens to all members. The PA Speaker said he is committed to running the assembly fairly and honestly.
“I have always respected the opposition’s rights,” he said. “But discipline in the house must be maintained.”
Malik Ahmad Khan also criticized continuous disruptions during key sessions. He noted that finance ministers and presidents have been interrupted for years.
“Is it fair that no one can deliver a complete speech in 22 years?” he asked.
The PA Speaker clarified that protest is allowed, but it must follow the rules. He added that some members were suspended only after serious misconduct.
He also called for better coordination within the assembly secretariat to avoid confusion in the future.
In closing, Malik Ahmad Khan urged both government and opposition members to respect each other and work within constitutional limits.Ex Deputy Speaker PA Dost Muhammad Mazari Joins PML-N in a major political development. He announced his decision ahead of the upcoming general elections.
