Oxford AQA has announced the inclusion of three new compulsory International GCSE subjects to better meet educational needs. The update was revealed at a ceremony organized by Oxford University Press (OUP) Pakistan in Karachi.
Educationists, administrators, and stakeholders attended the event, where the new subjects—Islamic Studies, Pakistan Studies, and Urdu—were formally introduced. These subjects aim to reflect Pakistan’s cultural and educational identity while maintaining international academic standards.
Officials from OUP Pakistan highlighted that the addition of these subjects will prepare students for challenges in a competitive global environment. They emphasized that integrating national subjects into the Oxford AQA International GCSE curriculum allows students to balance global learning with local values and identity.
Islamic Studies will help students understand their religious and cultural heritage. Pakistan Studies focuses on the country’s history, geography, and social development, while Urdu will strengthen language skills and promote national identity.
Administrators also noted that these curriculum changes will equip students with knowledge and skills useful for higher education and professional opportunities in Pakistan and abroad. The initiative ensures students receive a globally recognized education while staying connected to their roots.
Educators welcomed the update, saying it aligns international education with national priorities and allows students to gain a well-rounded understanding of both local and global perspectives.
With these additions, Oxford AQA IGCSE now officially includes subjects that integrate Pakistan’s culture and values into the international academic framework. The changes are expected to enhance student engagement and academic performance while promoting cultural awareness.
The decision marks a significant step in providing Pakistani students with a balanced education that combines global standards with national identity.
