Pakistani citizens are facing a severe crisis as skyrocketing electricity bills have left many struggling to make ends meet, with some even receiving bills higher than their house rents. This alarming situation has sparked widespread public outcry, including reactions from notable figures in the entertainment industry.
Senior actor and director Osman Peerzada voiced his deep concern during an interview, expressing his shock and fear about the escalating costs. “Toba Toba, these bills are terrifying. I don’t know what the future holds. Maybe I won’t be able to pay them,” he lamented. Peerzada even considered the possibility of having to cut off his electricity due to the unaffordable bills.

The surge in inflation and electricity bills has not spared the artistic community. Last week, presidential award-winning actor Rashid Mahmood shared his despair over his Rs45,000 electricity bill, which has further aggravated his health issues, including four heart attacks and a stroke. Mahmood’s disheartenment reached such an extent that he expressed a wish for death.
Peerzada reflected on the plight of financially vulnerable individuals, questioning how they would survive the extreme heat without electricity. He noted that while people are turning to solar panels as an alternative, the changing technology and imposed taxes are causing additional panic. “My bill is so terrifying that I don’t know what to say. We have an air conditioner at home, my wife, my son, and my daughter all sleep in one room,” he disclosed.
Renowned film star Nisho Begum also expressed her outrage upon receiving a Rs100,000 electricity bill, highlighting the widespread impact of the crisis across various sections of society.
The escalating electricity costs are not only causing financial strain but also exacerbating health issues and creating widespread anxiety, forcing many to contemplate drastic measures to cope with the situation.
