India is a key market for ChatGPT, where OpenAI recently launched its most affordable monthly plan at $4.60, aiming to tap into the country’s nearly one billion internet users. The firm, however, faces legal disputes in India, with publishers and media outlets accusing it of using their content without authorization to train ChatGPT—allegations the company denies.
CEO Sam Altman stated that opening an office and building a local team is a vital step in making advanced AI more accessible and in developing “AI for India, and with India.”
OpenAI also faces tough competition from Google’s Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, both offering free advanced features to Indian users.
