OpenAI is reportedly planning to add advertisements to ChatGPT, marking a major shift from its ad-free policy since 2022. The change was discovered through new code in the ChatGPT Android app, suggesting that OpenAI is actively testing an ad framework.
Computer engineer Tibor Blaho first noticed references to “ads feature,” “bazaar content,” “search ad,” and “search ads carousel” in a beta version of the app. These mentions indicate that ads may soon appear directly within the chatbot interface.
Since its launch, ChatGPT has remained completely ad-free. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman previously described ads as a “last resort” but recently expressed a more open stance. He compared potential ads to those on Instagram, signaling a possible shift in the company’s revenue strategy.
OpenAI collects large amounts of user interaction data, which could make future advertisements highly personalized. Experts note this personalization may make ads extremely valuable to marketers.
Despite projected sales of $13 billion from premium ChatGPT subscriptions in 2025, OpenAI has yet to achieve profitability. The company faces around $22 billion in expenses, mainly for AI infrastructure, including chips, data centers, and cloud services. A recent HSBC report suggests OpenAI may continue operating at a loss until 2030.
To sustain long-term growth, OpenAI may rely on advertising as a key revenue source alongside subscriptions. Analysts believe that incorporating ads will help offset rising operational costs and support future expansion.
While OpenAI has not made an official announcement, the leaked code indicates that the company is laying the technical groundwork for ads. User response is uncertain, and introducing ads may raise questions about data usage, transparency, and overall experience.
