No Deadline, No Illusions Russia-Ukraine Peace Talks Face Long Road Ahead

The Kremlin has confirmed that there is no set timeline for peace negotiations with Ukraine, underlining the intricate challenges involved in drafting a mutually acceptable ceasefire and long-term agreement. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday that any final deal would depend on a series of complex, parallel proposals from both Moscow and Kyiv.

“There are no deadlines and there cannot be any,” Peskov told Russian media. “Everyone wants peace quickly, but the devil is in the details.” He explained that both sides would need to submit their drafts independently before engaging in what he termed “complex contacts” to unify their positions.

The statement comes amid renewed global diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict, now entering its third year. On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump held separate calls with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, and several European leaders in an effort to restart the peace process. Trump later announced that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to begin immediate ceasefire talks, expressing hope for a “lasting peace.”

President Putin echoed that sentiment, stating that Russia was prepared to work on a future peace memorandum with Ukraine. However, no dates have been set for draft exchanges or formal negotiations. Diplomatic sources remain cautious, warning that substantial hurdles remain due to deep-rooted disagreements and the war’s complex legacy.

With the toll of the war mounting, the international community is watching closely. While early signs of engagement are welcome, diplomats stress that any real progress could take months, if not longer, especially with major issues like territorial sovereignty and security guarantees still unresolved.
