New Delhi is planning to take an unprecedented step by attempting to induce rainfall to alleviate the city’s air quality issues. The Indian capital, recognized as the world’s most polluted capital, has been shrouded in smog for a week.
To address the problem, the city has already taken measures such as closing schools, halting construction activities, and announcing forthcoming restrictions on vehicle use.

Subject to receiving legal approval and favorable weather conditions, local environmental authorities intend to initiate rain-making efforts around November 20.
Each year, air quality in the city worsens as winter approaches, with cold air trapping pollutants from various sources, including vehicles, industries, construction debris, and burning of agricultural waste.
Delhi’s Environment Minister, Gopal Rai, stated, “There is a possibility that, if current weather conditions persist, then this week or for some time in the future, the pollution situation will remain the same.”
Rai revealed that a rain-inducing proposal developed by experts will be presented to the Supreme Court on Friday. He expressed optimism, saying, “I believe that given the conditions we have and if we get support from everyone, we can conduct the first pilot at least.”
Notably, China, Indonesia, and Malaysia have previously employed rain-inducing methods to address similar environmental challenges.
