Netanyahu under pressure to end Gaza conflict following Sinwar's death

The killing of Yahya Sinwar, Hamas’ most wanted leader, is seen as a major victory for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, though it adds pressure for a resolution to the conflict and the release of hostages held in Gaza. Sinwar’s death is viewed by Netanyahu as a key turning point, with potential to bring the war closer to an end, especially if Hamas surrenders and returns the remaining 101 hostages.

While some Israeli political figures, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, demand Hamas’ complete surrender, others see an opportunity to end the conflict following Sinwar’s death. However, Hamas leaders remain defiant, and it’s uncertain how they will respond, with a key concern being who will succeed Sinwar and whether his death will inspire further resistance.

Despite international calls for a ceasefire, Netanyahu has continued his military approach, bolstered by the recent killing of top militant figures like Mohammed Deif, Ismail Haniyeh, and Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah. As Sinwar’s death adds to this list, it may offer Netanyahu a diplomatic “off-ramp” to end the conflict, though conditions for peace remain unclear.

In Gaza, reconstruction efforts will take years, given the extensive destruction, and international support will be crucial. While hostilities continue, many in Israel believe Sinwar’s death presents a rare opportunity for a diplomatic resolution.
