NESPAK Seeks IRSA Approval For Telemetry System At Kotri Barrage

NESPAK has requested approval from the Indus River System Authority (IRSA) to install a telemetry system at Kotri Barrage. This system will monitor water inflows and outflows more accurately.

According to a letter from NESPAK’s Chief Engineer Indus, the company has formally sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) from IRSA. Similar telemetry systems have already been approved and installed at Sukkur and Guddu barrages.

NESPAK has successfully installed telemetry systems at 27 sites across the provinces of Sindh and Punjab. The IRSA meeting notes specify a deadline of June 30, 2026, for completing all installations.

However, the installation process at Sukkur and Guddu has been delayed due to ongoing repair and construction work. IRSA clarified that telemetry systems cannot be installed until these repairs are finished.

In a related update, the Sindh Irrigation Department revealed that 10 gates at Sukkur Barrage have remained closed since 1939. To resolve this, foreign experts have been engaged to either open or replace the non-functional gates.

The telemetry system will help NESPAK and IRSA better manage water resources and improve flood and drought control. Real-time monitoring at Kotri Barrage will enhance decision-making and water distribution efficiency.

NESPAK’s request marks an important step toward modernizing water management infrastructure in the region. The approval from IRSA will allow the project to move forward and contribute to improved river system monitoring.

Authorities expect the new telemetry system to support timely responses to changing water levels, helping protect communities and agriculture dependent on the river. NESPAK remains committed to advancing water management through technology and cooperation with IRSA.
