Nehal Hashmi Set to Replace Kamran Tessori as Sindh Governor

Senior politician Nehal Hashmi has been nominated to become the next governor of Sindh, potentially replacing the current governor Kamran Tessori. The move signals a possible change in leadership at the Governor House in Karachi.

According to officials, Shehbaz Sharif has forwarded a formal summary to Asif Ali Zardari for final approval. Once the president endorses the recommendation, the appointment of Hashmi could be officially announced. Sources from the Prime Minister’s Office confirmed that the process has been completed and the nomination is now awaiting presidential consent.

The prime minister also met Hashmi and congratulated him on being selected for the important constitutional position, indicating that the decision has already received strong backing from the federal leadership. If approved, the change would bring new leadership to the province’s top constitutional office.

The development comes amid growing criticism of the current governor, Kamran Tessori, from legal circles and political leaders. Several groups have raised concerns about alleged political activities being conducted at the Governor House, which they argue contradict the neutral role expected from a constitutional office holder.

Last month, the Sindh Bar Council demanded Tessori’s removal from office. During its 109th meeting on February 21, the council passed a resolution claiming that political meetings and gatherings at the Governor House violated constitutional norms. The resolution stated that the governor’s alleged involvement in political matters made him unfit to represent the federation and urged the president to remove him immediately.

The controversy intensified after an event held at the Governor House on February 20 that was attended by members of Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan. Several nationalist leaders from Sindh strongly criticized the gathering.

Ayaz Latif Palijo, leader of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek, accused Tessori of turning the Governor House into a platform for political activities against Sindh. Meanwhile, Sharjeel Inam Memon also condemned speeches delivered at the event, describing them as inappropriate and biased for a constitutional forum meant to represent the federation.
