KARACHI: Sindh’s newly appointed Governor Nehal Hashmi on Sunday clarified that he is not an elected representative but a constitutional governor while speaking at his first press conference in Karachi.
At the beginning of his media briefing, Hashmi highlighted that his role as governor is to represent every resident of Sindh, including people living in villages and remote districts. He emphasized that the position should not be viewed as a privilege but rather as a major responsibility. He also prayed that God would grant him the strength to perform his duties with honesty, fairness, and dedication.
The governor pledged that the federal government would work to create more employment opportunities and improve educational facilities for young people across the province. He expressed happiness over the plan to introduce the Prime Minister’s Youth Programme in Sindh as well, saying the initiative would be implemented with cooperation from relevant stakeholders.
Hashmi stated that he had already informed Fahad Shafiq, the PMYP coordinator for Sindh, that the same opportunities for jobs, education, and training provided to youth in other regions would also be extended to the province. According to him, the initiative would not be limited to youth programs or computer training alone, but would include a broader and more comprehensive educational framework.
He assured that academic certifications would be issued on schedule and degrees would be awarded without unnecessary delays.
During the press conference, Hashmi also announced that free Sehri and Iftar meals would be arranged at the Governor House Karachi for deserving individuals starting Monday. He stressed that such initiatives should serve the entire nation rather than being associated with any political party.
Commenting on the media, the Pakistan Muslim League (N) leader said there is a clear difference between genuine news and propaganda. He said people were free to express opinions about him personally but requested them not to speak negatively about the country, the province of Sindh, or its capital, Karachi.
Speaking about Chief of Defence Forces Asim Munir, Hashmi remarked that he comes from a humble household similar to many others, where patriotism and hard work are fundamental values.
