Pakistan on Alert for Heavy Rains, Flooding from Saturday

The National Disaster Management Authority’s (NDMA) National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) has issued a high alert, warning of heavy rainfall and possible flooding across Pakistan from August 23 to 30.

According to forecasts, three major rain systems will enter the country during this period, bringing widespread downpours. From August 23–25, Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Kashmir are expected to experience heavy rain, raising risks of urban flooding in cities such as Lahore, Faisalabad, Multan, Rawalpindi, and Gujranwala. Landslides are feared in hilly and mountainous areas.

In southern Punjab, hill torrents may swell in Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, and Dera Ismail Khan. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts, including Chitral, Swat, Mansehra, and Abbottabad, face flash flood threats from August 23–27. Similar risks exist in parts of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan, where landslides could cut off mountain roads.

From August 27–30, coastal and interior Sindh—including Karachi, Thatta, Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana—are forecast to receive heavy downpours. Balochistan will also see strong rains in Gwadar, Turbat, Khuzdar, and Lasbela. Rising water levels in the Indus, Ravi, and Chenab rivers could worsen flooding.

NDMA has placed all agencies on alert, urging people, especially tourists, to exercise caution and avoid risky travel routes.
