NDMA Issues Alert Over Severe Flood Risk Across Multiple Areas in Pakistan

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a flood warning for multiple regions, anticipating heavy rainfall until September 3.

The report warns that eastern rivers could see a significant surge in water levels. The Sutlej River is currently at 253,068 cusecs, with an expected additional 300,000 cusecs due to upstream rainfall and dam releases. The Ravi River at Jassar is flowing normally at 60,094 cusecs but could rise to 150,000 cusecs with further rainfall and releases from Thein Dam. Tributaries like Bein, Basantar, and Dek may also flood.

The Chenab River at Marala is at a low 94,728 cusecs but could reach flood levels due to rainfall in Jammu and Indian-administered Kashmir and upstream dam releases, including Salal, Baglihar, and Dul Hasti. Its tributaries—Jammu Tawi, Munawar Tawi, and Palku—are also at risk. Low-lying and riverside areas may face inundation, embankment breaches, and damage to crops and settlements.

NDMA has urged local residents, farmers, and authorities to stay alert and take precautions. Acting on the Prime Minister’s instructions, NDMA is coordinating 24/7 rescue and relief operations with civil and military agencies.

Residents near rivers and waterways are advised to evacuate to safe zones, follow official instructions, and avoid returning prematurely. The public should avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas, prepare emergency supplies, secure important documents, and use the NDMA Disaster Alert app for updates.
