NADRA Issues Advisory Against Unnecessary CNIC Photocopying to Prevent Identity Theft
The National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) has issued an important public advisory urging citizens to avoid photocopying their Computerised National Identity Cards (CNICs) unless absolutely necessary.
In its official statement, NADRA emphasized that photocopies of CNICs are not required when submitting forms or registering for services. Instead, citizens are encouraged to bring their original CNICs along with any other required documents.

NADRA further clarified that there is no legal requirement for photocopies of CNICs in routine procedures, highlighting the growing threat of identity theft. Criminals have been exploiting this vulnerability by tricking individuals into handing over their CNICs under false pretenses. These fraudulent actors often promise financial rewards, prizes, or other incentives, only to collect personal information, including fingerprints, which can be used for illegal activities.
The advisory stressed the need for caution, particularly at NADRA centers, where such incidents have been reported. Citizens are advised not to hand over their CNICs as collateral for any services or prizes, as this increases the risk of misuse.
This step to curb unnecessary photocopying of CNICs is part of NADRA’s broader initiative to protect citizens from identity theft and ensure the security of personal data.
