As cities like Lahore and other plains in Punjab grapple with severe smog, Murree stands out as a rare haven, free from air pollution. Situated at an altitude of 7,500 feet above sea level, Murree enjoys clean, crisp air and clear skies, offering a refreshing escape for visitors seeking relief from the hazardous smog that blankets much of the region.
According to Zahid Hussain, the in-charge of the Meteorological Department, the key reasons for Murree’s smog-free environment are its high altitude, dense forests, and relatively low traffic compared to other urban areas. “The primary reason Murree is free from smog is its high altitude of 7,000 feet. It has open air, dense forests, and minimal vehicular traffic,” Hussain explains.

Locals highlight the importance of planting more trees and taking collective action to tackle air pollution across Punjab. With consistent efforts, they believe similar clean air conditions could be replicated in other parts of the region.
