Mufti Taqi Usmani Calls Lifetime Presidential Immunity Un-Islamic

Pakistan’s Grand Mufti, Maulana Taqi Usmani, has stated that Islam does not allow any individual, including officials, to be above judicial accountability, and granting lifetime immunity to the President contradicts both Sharia and the Constitution.

In a post on X, Mufti Usmani emphasized that “no one, regardless of their position, can be exempt from judicial proceedings in Islam.” He noted that even during the era of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, leaders were held accountable. He criticized the constitutional protection previously provided to the President during their term as already un-Islamic and called extending it for life completely against Islamic teachings and the Constitution, describing it as a national disgrace. He prayed for Allah to protect the country from such actions and urged lawmakers not to bear responsibility for this wrongdoing.

The remarks come after the Senate passed the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which grants lifetime legal immunity to the President. The amendment to Article 248, presented by Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, prevents any legal proceedings against a former President, though immunity ends if the individual assumes another public office.
