In a remarkable feat, a Pakistani mother and daughter celebrated their graduations together, surrounded by family, friends, and university officials.
Dr. Saadia Wahid earned her Ph.D. in English Literature, while her daughter, Widad Wahid, completed her BS in Psychology, topping her class and receiving a gold medal for exceptional academic performance.
Widad described the day as unforgettable, especially with her grandfather present, marking a rare three-generation celebration of achievement. She revealed that most of her classmates and teachers were unaware her mother was pursuing a doctorate simultaneously, a secret she kept to prevent any perception of favoritism.
Currently pursuing her Master’s at Punjab University, Widad plans to practice professionally as a psychologist. She credited her mother for her guidance, saying, “Even though our fields differ, my mother’s advice, support, and encouragement were invaluable throughout my studies.” She also highlighted the importance of children supporting their parents, just as parents support them.
Dr. Saadia reflected on her journey, noting the challenges of balancing household responsibilities, work, children’s education, and Ph.D. research. With the steadfast support of her family, supervisors, and university faculty, she successfully completed her thesis and defended it.
