The recent onset of monsoon rains in Punjab, particularly in Lahore and various districts, has brought much-needed relief from the heat and humidity. According to Express News, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecasted monsoon rains continuing across Punjab until July 20th. This weather system has prompted the Managing Director of WASA, Ghufran Ahmed, to direct all operational staff to be prepared for drainage operations.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDM) has issued alerts across the province, warning of heavy rains accompanied by strong winds. Southern Punjab, in particular, is expected to experience thunderstorms and heavy rainfall by July 19th.

Initial rainfall measurements indicate significant amounts in various districts: Jhelum recorded 54mm, Sialkot 47mm, Hafizabad 40mm, and Sheikhupura 19mm.

In response to these forecasts, DG PDM Irfan Ali Kathia stressed the importance of readiness, with all relevant departments and emergency operation centers on high alert. Rescue organizations like 1122 have been instructed to keep their machinery and staff ready for deployment.

Kathia advised citizens to take precautions such as ensuring prompt drainage in low-lying areas, avoiding electric poles and hanging wires, staying away from dilapidated buildings, and keeping children away from standing water.

This cautionary approach comes after Lahore recently experienced record-breaking rainfall, with the Tajpura area receiving 315mm, surpassing a three-decade-old record. The heavy downpour and strong winds transformed the city’s streets into temporary rivers, causing significant disruption.

Official reports from WASA indicated substantial rainfall across Lahore: 130mm in Lakshmi Chowk, 132mm in Mughalpura, 133mm in Gulshan Ravi, and similar amounts in other parts like Iqbal Town, Samanabad, and Nishtar Town.

As the monsoon season progresses, authorities continue to urge the public to stay alert, take necessary precautions, and monitor official advisories to ensure safety during these weather conditions.
