Narendra Modi and Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva are set to hold key talks in New Delhi on Saturday aimed at strengthening cooperation in critical minerals and rare earth resources, sectors increasingly viewed as strategic assets in global technology, defense, and clean-energy industries.
Brazil holds the world’s second-largest reserves of rare earth elements used in electric vehicles, solar panels, smartphones, jet engines, and missile systems, while India is seeking alternative suppliers to reduce reliance on China, which dominates global production and refining capacity.
According to AFP, Lula arrived earlier this week leading a delegation of ministers and business leaders. Officials say discussions will likely include signing a memorandum on mineral cooperation and expanding trade ties, as both nations aim to deepen economic collaboration across multiple strategic sectors.
Bilateral trade between the two countries exceeded $15 billion in 2025, making Brazil India’s largest partner in Latin America. Leaders have set an ambitious target of reaching $20 billion by 2030, with key exports including crude oil, sugar, cotton, vegetable oils, and iron ore supporting India’s rapidly expanding infrastructure and industrial sectors.
Analysts such as Rishabh Jain from the Council on Energy, Environment and Water say India’s mineral partnerships with Brazil complement recent supply-chain engagements with the United States, France, and the European Union, combining access to technology and finance with diversified resource sources.
The leaders are also expected to discuss global trade challenges after both countries faced tariffs in 2025. Brazilian firms such as Embraer and India’s Adani Group recently announced plans to produce aircraft locally, while Lula’s trip will continue to South Korea for meetings with Lee Jae Myung.
