A moderate earthquake shook several areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Thursday, causing alarm among residents but reportedly leaving no major damage. The tremors were felt in districts including Peshawar, Mardan, Swat, and nearby regions, prompting people to rush outdoors for safety.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the earthquake measured 4.8 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of approximately 15 kilometers. The epicenter was reported near the Shangla district, an area known for its hilly terrain and seismic activity.
Local authorities confirmed that while the earthquake caused temporary panic, there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage. Schools, markets, and offices briefly evacuated staff and students as a precautionary measure during the tremors.
Residents described the shaking as “strong but brief,” and many shared that household items had fallen off shelves, though furniture and buildings largely remained intact. Social media platforms were flooded with posts as people confirmed they felt the earthquake in different towns and cities of KP.
Seismologists highlighted that the region lies in an active seismic zone due to tectonic plate interactions. They urged citizens to remain cautious, follow safety protocols, and report any damages to local authorities. Emergency response teams have been placed on standby to assist in case of aftershocks.
Officials emphasized the importance of preparedness, especially in areas prone to earthquakes, recommending that residents identify safe spots in their homes, avoid panicking, and stay alert for potential aftershocks.
