Microsoft Plans To Transform Xbox Into Full Windows Gaming PC

Microsoft is preparing to make a major change in its gaming strategy by transforming the next-generation Xbox into a Windows-based gaming system. The move aims to merge the convenience of console gaming with the flexibility of a PC, offering players more control and options than ever before.

According to internal reports, the upcoming Xbox will run a full version of Windows with a TV-friendly interface similar to the current Xbox dashboard. Players will be able to switch between a console-style layout and the full Windows desktop. This means users can access platforms like Steam, Epic Games Store, and Battle.net, or even run productivity apps such as Microsoft Office and Adobe Creative Cloud.

This dual-mode setup expands on Microsoft’s collaboration with ASUS through the Xbox Ally, a handheld gaming device that runs Windows. The company has been collecting user feedback from the Ally and its upgraded version, Ally X, to refine the hybrid experience before launching the next console.

The new Xbox will still support previous-generation titles, including games from the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. These will be playable through the Xbox app, enhanced by features like AI-based resolution scaling and frame generation for smoother visuals.

Microsoft also plans to allow all Windows-compatible games to run natively on the console. This could open access to major titles such as God of War, Spider-Man, and League of Legends, giving Xbox users broader gaming options.

The company is reportedly rethinking its Xbox Game Pass model as well. Discussions include removing the paid multiplayer requirement and aligning Xbox’s online structure with PC standards.

Microsoft is expected to launch the next-generation Xbox in 2027. Described as a premium product, the console will likely cost more than previous models but remain cheaper than comparable gaming PCs, thanks to Microsoft’s Windows integration and hardware partnerships.
