Lionel Messi Named MLS Most Valuable Player for 2024

Lionel Messi was awarded the Major League Soccer (MLS) Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2024 season on Friday, following a remarkable year with Inter Miami. The Argentine forward played a pivotal role in guiding his team to a record-breaking regular season, helping them achieve their first-ever Supporters Shield.

Messi finished the season with 36 goal contributions—20 goals and 16 assists—leading the league in both categories. Despite struggling with injuries and making just 19 appearances, Messi’s influence on the field was undeniable.

At 37, Messi became the 10th South American player to win the prestigious MVP award, and the fifth from Argentina, joining the ranks of Luciano Acosta, Diego Valeri, Guillermo Barros Schelotto, and Christian Gomez.

During the award ceremony at Inter Miami’s Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, Messi shared the moment with the team’s Academy players. In a heartfelt message shared on the club’s website, Messi expressed his gratitude and pride for being part of both the team and the city, encouraging the young players to chase their dreams.

MLS commissioner Don Garber commended Messi’s impact on the league, stating that his presence not only elevated the standard of football in the U.S. but also brought an unmatched level of stardom to Major League Soccer.
