Maxwell Bids Farewell to ODI Cricket, Eyes T20 Glory

Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has officially announced his retirement from One Day Internationals, bringing the curtain down on a stellar 12-year ODI career. The 36-year-old all-rounder, who was instrumental in Australia’s 2015 and 2023 World Cup triumphs, will continue to don the national jersey in T20 internationals.

Maxwell leaves the ODI format with a legacy of 3,990 runs at a blazing strike rate of 126.70 — the second-highest in the format’s history — along with 77 wickets and 91 catches. His unforgettable double century against Afghanistan in the 2023 World Cup, an unbeaten 201, remains one of the most iconic innings in one-day cricket.

Citing physical challenges and long-term fitness concerns, Maxwell said the decision was necessary to stay fresh for the T20 format. “I didn’t see myself making it to the 2027 World Cup. It’s time for someone else to make that position their own,” he said, reflecting on his conversation with selector George Bailey.

Tributes poured in from across the cricketing community. Cricket Australia’s Todd Greenberg hailed Maxwell as a “ballistic” force who inspired countless fans, while Bailey described him as “one of the game’s most dynamic players.” Though the ODI chapter closes, fans can still expect more fireworks from Maxwell as he gears up for the 2026 T20 World Cup.
