Former Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino is set to become the new head coach of the United States men’s national team, according to an ESPN report on Thursday.

The Argentine, who has been without a managerial role since leaving Chelsea in May after a single season with the Premier League club, is expected to lead the USMNT into the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

ESPN reports that Pochettino, 52, is anticipated to be in place for the USMNT’s September 7 match against Canada in Kansas City, Kansas.

The US men’s team has been without a head coach since Gregg Berhalter was dismissed in July following a disappointing early exit from the Copa America on home soil.

Pochettino joined Chelsea before the 2023-24 season, taking over from interim manager Frank Lampard. Despite signing a two-year contract with an option for a third year, Pochettino left the club after a challenging season, finishing sixth in the Premier League and securing a place in European competitions for the next season.
