Maryam Nawaz Launches Laptop Distribution in Gujranwala

Punjab’s education authorities have announced that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif will officially begin distributing laptops in another division of the province on Monday, marking a fresh phase of the government’s flagship student support initiative. The ceremony is expected to attract students, education officials, and local representatives eager to witness the rollout.

The event will be held at the University of Gujrat, located in the Gujranwala Division, where selected students from various higher education institutions will receive their devices. Officials say preparations have been finalized to ensure smooth arrangements, including verification desks, registration counters, and seating for participants.

This distribution drive is part of the Punjab government’s broader strategy to expand access to technology among students and reduce the digital divide in education. Authorities believe providing laptops will support academic research, online learning, and skill development, particularly for students who cannot afford modern devices on their own.

Earlier, the provincial administration extended the deadline for submitting applications under the CM Punjab Laptop Program until February 28, 2026. The extension was granted after education departments received requests from institutions and students seeking additional time to complete registration through the official portal.

In a significant policy shift, the eligibility criteria were also widened to include students enrolled in private universities. Under the revised rules, private institution students who have secured at least 65 percent marks can now apply for a free laptop, a move officials say promotes fairness and equal opportunity across different education sectors.

Government representatives have emphasized that the distribution ceremonies will continue division by division until all approved students receive their devices. They added that the phased rollout allows better organization, transparency, and monitoring of the process while ensuring that deserving candidates are prioritized.

Education analysts note that such initiatives can play an important role in strengthening digital literacy, especially as universities increasingly rely on online platforms, virtual classrooms, and digital assignments. They argue that consistent access to technology can enhance learning outcomes and prepare students for modern workplace demands.

Officials reaffirmed that the scheme reflects the provincial leadership’s commitment to empowering youth through education and technological support, adding that further student-focused programs are also under consideration.
