Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado has been awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The Nobel Committee recognized her as a courageous advocate for democracy and peace.
The announcement came from Oslo, where Nobel Committee Chairman Jørgen Watne Frydnes praised Machado’s commitment to defending the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people.
In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), the committee said Machado received the prize “for her tireless efforts promoting democratic rights and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.”
The Nobel Committee described her as “a woman who keeps the flame of democracy alive in a time of growing darkness.” Frydnes called her one of Latin America’s most courageous leaders in recent years.
He emphasized that defending democracy in Venezuela remains dangerous. Despite facing threats and intimidation, Machado has continued her advocacy for free and fair elections. She chose peaceful, nonviolent methods over armed conflict more than 20 years ago.
Machado has long been a key unifying figure in Venezuela’s opposition movement. Her leadership symbolizes hope for a peaceful democratic transition in a nation facing political and economic challenges.
The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize includes a medal, a diploma, and a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor, roughly $1.16 million. As the sole laureate, Machado will receive the full prize.
