Marcus Stoinis Shocks with Immediate ODI Retirement Before ICC Champions Trophy

Australia’s all-rounder Marcus Stoinis has made a surprising decision to retire from One Day International (ODI) cricket, just ahead of Australia’s participation in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 34-year-old announced his exit from the format, leaving fans and analysts alike stunned by the timing.

Stoinis, who has been a crucial part of Australia’s recent successes, accumulated 1495 runs in 71 ODIs with an average of 26.69. He also claimed 48 wickets at an average of 43.12, with his career-defining innings being a 146 not out against New Zealand in 2017. Despite his instrumental role in Australia’s World Cup victory in 2023, particularly in their match against Pakistan, Stoinis feels it is the right time to move on.

Reflecting on his career, Stoinis expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Australia. “Playing ODI cricket for Australia has been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for every moment I’ve had in the green and gold,” he shared. The decision was not easy, but Stoinis believes stepping away now will allow him to focus on the next phase of his career.

Stoinis will continue to support his teammates from the sidelines as Australia prepares for the Champions Trophy, despite not participating in the tournament. With Mitchell Marsh and Pat Cummins sidelined due to injuries, and other changes expected in the squad, Australia will need to adapt as they head into the prestigious event.
