Manipur Violence Escalates Despite Governor’s Rule and Security Measures

The civil conflict in Manipur, India, has escalated despite the imposition of governor’s rule by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government. The central government took direct control of the state in an effort to quell the unrest, but violence and instability continue to grip the region.

Reports from Indian media indicate that the army and police are conducting a strict crackdown, especially targeting the minority Kuki tribes. Authorities have enforced curfews in five districts, suspended internet services, and numerous incidents of arson, blockades, and vandalism have been recorded.

The opposition Congress party sharply criticised the government’s response, highlighting Modi’s frequent foreign visits and pointing out his absence from the troubled state. Congress condemned the administration, saying that despite direct control, the government has failed to restore peace and order.

As the situation remains tense, the future of Manipur’s stability hangs in the balance, with calls for more effective measures to address the deep-rooted conflict.
