Malaysia Steps Up Search for Missing Rohingya Boats

Malaysian authorities have intensified efforts to locate Rohingya refugees after multiple boats went missing near the Thailand‑Malaysia maritime border. At least 11 people have died, and dozens remain unaccounted for, highlighting the dangers faced by migrants fleeing persecution.

The boats were carrying hundreds of Rohingya, many of whom were trying to reach Malaysia from Myanmar and Bangladesh. Survivors reported overcrowded vessels and rough seas, underscoring the perilous nature of these journeys.

The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), with support from Thai authorities, is conducting extensive search-and-rescue operations over a wide area. Patrols are also monitoring coastal regions where debris and survivors have been spotted.

Officials warn that human traffickers continue to exploit vulnerable refugees, forcing them onto unsafe boats. Authorities are urging communities to report any suspicious activity at sea.

The incident has reignited calls from human rights groups for safer migration channels and better protection for Rohingya refugees in the region.
