Ex-senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan has safely departed for Pakistan following his detention by Israel. The Pakistan embassy in Jordan confirmed his return late on Wednesday.
Mushtaq led the Pakistani delegation on the 45-vessel Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF). The flotilla, which included activists and politicians like Greta Thunberg, left Spain last month carrying aid for Gaza. It aimed to break Israel’s blockade and deliver humanitarian assistance.
As the flotilla approached Gaza, Israeli forces intercepted it and detained the activists. Ex-senator Mushtaq and others were held before being deported. The embassy confirmed that all necessary arrangements were made for his safe and smooth departure under instructions from Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister.
Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar spoke with Jordanian Deputy Prime Minister Ayman Safadi. Dar appreciated Jordan’s role in receiving the released detainees and facilitating their return. He thanked Jordan for helping ex-senator Mushtaq Ahmad Khan reach Amman safely.
Ex-senator Mushtaq expressed gratitude to the Pakistan Foreign Office for coordinating with a friendly European mission in Tel Aviv. He also praised the Pakistan embassy in Amman for providing full support during his stay. Dar stated that Mushtaq was in good spirits and lauded his courage for participating in the flotilla to support Palestinians.
In a social media post, ex-senator Mushtaq described the harsh conditions during detention. He revealed that activists were restrained, denied water, medication, and basic rest. He said the group went on a three-day hunger strike while in detention.
Mushtaq stressed that the fight against the Israeli blockade would continue. He vowed to continue efforts to help Gaza and hold those responsible accountable. The ex-senator is expected to provide a detailed account of his experience on the flotilla and in detention once back in Pakistan.
