French President Emmanuel Macron said former U.S. President Donald Trump must use his influence to halt the Gaza war if he wants to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Speaking to BFM TV from the UN General Assembly in New York, Macron argued that only Trump has the leverage to stop the conflict since Washington supplies arms to Israel. He stressed the need for an immediate ceasefire and peace talks, noting that Europe lacks the same influence because it does not provide weapons fueling the war.
Macron directly responded to Trump’s UN speech, in which the ex-president called for peace while rejecting recognition of a Palestinian state. Macron welcomed his words but challenged him to act, saying, “The Nobel Peace Prize is only possible if you stop this conflict.”
Trump, who has received past Nobel nominations for his mediation efforts, maintains he deserves the award, pointing to his record of conflict resolution. The White House defended his role, claiming he has achieved more for global peace than other leaders at the UN.
