Lina Khan picked by Zohran Mamdani to help lead New York

New York’s mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani has named Pakistani-American legal expert Lina Maliha Khan as co-chair of his transition team.

Mamdani, 34, will become the first Muslim and South Asian mayor of New York City when he takes office on January 1, 2026 — heading the nation’s largest city with a $116 billion budget and significant global influence.

Lina Khan, 36, former chair of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission, will help lead the transition alongside three experienced City Hall officials. She said New Yorkers have demanded a more affordable city, and she is proud to help Mamdani build a team capable of delivering that change.

As FTC chair under President Biden, Khan was a key voice on antitrust and consumer rights, pushing tougher action against harmful corporate mergers, hidden fees, and restrictive arbitration policies. Her work drew strong backing from progressives for challenging corporate dominance.

Khan also took on major tech companies, including Amazon and Microsoft, earning recognition from both sides of the political spectrum — even winning praise from conservative figures like J.D. Vance and Steve Bannon for her efforts to promote fair competition.
