Thousands had gathered in the rain to show support for Bolsonaro. He was sentenced to 27 years in prison last year for his role in a failed coup attempt. Videos shared online show crowds with umbrellas and plastic ponchos startled by a bright flash and loud thunder.

The fire department reported that 89 people were treated at the scene. Forty-seven of them were taken to hospitals for further care. Eleven needed major medical attention.

The rally was organized by lawmaker Nikolas Ferreira. The purpose was to demand amnesty for Bolsonaro.

Bolsonaro remains imprisoned at the Papuda penitentiary complex in Brasilia. He has ongoing health issues from a 2018 stabbing campaign. In December, he spent a week in hospital for surgery and treatment.

Earlier this month, he fell in prison but did not suffer serious injuries.

Authorities continue to warn people about the dangers of lightning strikes during storms. Lightning can strike suddenly and cause serious injuries or even death. Officials also advised event organizers to monitor weather warnings carefully. Public gatherings during storms carry high risks.

This incident is a reminder of the unpredictable nature of severe weather. Emergency teams were praised for quickly treating the injured. Read our news on Bolsonaro’s prison health updates for the latest information.
