Residents of Dubai witnessed a rare and stunning natural event when lightning struck the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, during intense rainfall across the United Arab Emirates. The dramatic moment occurred on Thursday and quickly drew global attention.
A brief video capturing the lightning strike was shared on social media by Dubai’s Crown Prince and UAE Defence Minister, Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. The clip rapidly went viral, showing the Burj Khalifa rising through thick storm clouds beneath an unusual green-tinted sky, as a bolt of lightning appeared to hit near the building’s upper levels.
The video was released just hours after Sheikh Hamdan had advised residents to remain alert and prepared for severe weather conditions expected over the coming days.
According to the National Center of Meteorology (NCM), a low-pressure weather system known as Al-Bushaer began influencing the UAE on Thursday, December 18. The system triggered heavy rain, thunderstorms, and hail in several parts of the country, particularly affecting areas such as Sharjah and Ras Al Khaimah.
Weather experts explained that surface low pressure extending from the Red Sea created atmospheric instability across the region. This led to the rapid formation of storm clouds, frequent lightning, rainfall, and isolated hailstorms.
Authorities have urged the public to stay informed through official weather advisories and to take necessary safety measures as the country continues to experience unusually volatile weather conditions.
