LHC Issues Stern Warning Over Unlawful Tree Cutting in Lahore

Justice Shahid Kareem of the Lahore High Court has ordered strict legal action against those involved in the illegal cutting of trees in Lahore, warning that violators could face criminal charges, including contempt of court

During the hearing, the judge criticized the Environment Department’s enforcement unit for failing to control pollution from vehicles and neglecting its responsibilities. He also expressed dissatisfaction with the Environmental Commission’s work and demanded a detailed report on the unit’s operations and the proposed Yellow Line Train project along Canal Road, emphasizing that tree cutting in the area remains banned under the Canal Heritage Act.

Additionally, the court addressed several environmental issues, including pollution from generators, untreated wastewater from factories, and reforestation efforts. Officials provided updates on risk allowance disputes for traffic wardens, ongoing installation of water meters by WASA, and restrictions on tree removal by housing societies. The hearing was attended by key government representatives, with proceedings adjourned until June 27.
