Harold “Dickie” Bird, the legendary cricket umpire, has passed away at the age of 92. Born in Barnsley, Bird began his cricketing journey in 1956 as a promising top-order batsman but was forced to retire early due to injuries. Determined to stay connected to the game, he transitioned to umpiring in 1970, a move that would shape his lasting legacy in world cricket.

Over his illustrious career, Bird stood in 66 Test matches and 76 One-Day Internationals, including officiating in three World Cup finals—an achievement that placed him among the most respected figures in the sport. Known for his fairness, dedication, and love for cricket, he earned admiration from players and fans worldwide.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club, where Bird also played, paid tribute by calling him a “national treasure,” while the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) expressed profound grief at his passing, honoring his remarkable contribution to the game.
