Legendary Actor and Filmmaker Manoj Kumar Passes Away at 87

Veteran Bollywood actor and filmmaker Manoj Kumar, widely known as ‘Bharat Kumar’ for his iconic patriotic roles, passed away on Friday, February 21, 2025, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Mumbai. He was 87 years old. According to medical reports, the actor succumbed to a cardiogenic shock caused by a severe heart attack. He had been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis in recent months, which worsened his health.

Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO of the hospital, confirmed the news, stating that Manoj Kumar passed away peacefully at around 3:30 AM after being hospitalized for the past few weeks. The news of his demise sent shockwaves through the film industry, and tributes quickly poured in from celebrities, politicians, and fans alike.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, remembering Kumar’s significant contribution to Indian cinema. “He was an icon of Indian cinema, particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal. His works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations,” said Modi.

Born Harikrishan Goswami in Amritsar, Punjab, on July 24, 1937, Manoj Kumar was one of Bollywood’s biggest stars during the 1960s and 70s. Known for his performances in films like Shaheed, Upkar, Rang De Basanti, Shor, and Roti Kapda Aur Makaan, his patriotic roles earned him the moniker ‘Bharat Kumar.’ He was also a successful director and producer, helming films like Upkar, Kranti, and Clerk. After retiring from acting, Kumar briefly ventured into politics, joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

His contributions to Indian cinema and his portrayal of national pride will continue to inspire generations.
