The Punjab government has imposed a ban on the entry of vehicles emitting smoke and those equipped with pressure horns into Lahore. This decision, effective from October 11, follows directives from the Caretaker Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Inspector General of Police Punjab Dr. Usman Anwar.

The initiative, carried out in coordination with the Environmental Protection Agency, aims to address the concerning levels of smog in the provincial capital.

Additionally, IG Punjab has instructed the issuance of certificates for vehicles found to be unfit, and a motor vehicle examiner will be called for assistance as needed.

To combat smog in the provincial capital, Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code has been enforced. The burning of stubble in agricultural fields across all districts in the Lahore division is now prohibited. Moreover, tractor-trolleys transporting sand and other materials without adequate covering are also barred from entering Lahore.

In response to the deteriorating smog conditions, the district administration has introduced stringent measures. Pending government approval, schools, markets, and factories may remain closed every Wednesday. Government departments, as per the proposals, are advised to operate with half their usual workforce.

In a related move, the Rawalpindi City Traffic Police has announced a crackdown on vehicles emitting harmful smoke, banning them from entering the city and imposing substantial fines.
