The Punjab government has announced the introduction of 400 electric buses to tackle Lahore’s persistent smog issue. Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb revealed this initiative, aimed at improving air quality and reducing pollution, during a press conference focused on climate change and anti-smog measures.
These electric buses are central to addressing the pollution caused by conventional vehicles, which significantly contribute to smog in the city. This initiative is part of a comprehensive 10-year anti-smog plan that combines technological solutions and policy reforms to combat the environmental crisis, promoting eco-friendly transportation alternatives.

Initially, 27 electric buses are set to arrive in Lahore by January 2025, with a total of 400 planned to operate across the city in the coming months. The project is also part of a broader effort to transition 5.2 million motorbikes in Lahore to electric models, further reducing emissions and promoting cleaner air.
The electric buses are a key element of the government’s strategy to reduce smog, which typically worsens during the winter months. In addition to introducing electric buses, the government has been working on other measures, such as regulating factories with excessive smoke emissions, controlling brick kiln pollution, and promoting environmentally friendly agricultural practices.
This initiative is expected to make a significant impact on air quality in Lahore, which has long struggled with pollution. The government’s goal is to reduce smog levels by 38% compared to the previous year, with ongoing efforts to further lower pollution in the future.
