[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text dp_text_size=”size-4″]KARACHI: Police on Saturday opened a probe into the devastating attack on the Karachi Police Office (KPO) on Friday evening as law enforcement officials attempted to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident, which was claimed by the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, an outlawed organisation (TTP).

In addition to performing the last rites for the murdered officers and a civilian, two of the attackers have been named. Separately, Syed Murad Ali Shah, the chief minister of Sindh, and Chief of Army Staff Gen. Syed Asim Munir paid visits to the injured.

During the hours-long joint operation by the police, Rangers, and army soldiers, three militants wearing suicide vests were murdered, three law enforcement officers and one civilian were martyred, and 18 people, predominantly police and Rangers’ members, were injured. According to the police spokeswoman, the IGP set up a committee to look into the occurrence and oversee the investigation of the matter.

In addition to South DIG Irfan Ali Baloch, CIA DIG Mohammad Karim Khan, CTD SSP Operations Tariq Nawaz, and CTD’s in-charge investigation DSP Raja Umar Khattab, the group will be led by CTD DIG Zulfiqar Ali Larik. All three of the terrorists who were murdered were wearing suicide vests; one detonated, and the other two were neutralised by members of the Bomb Disposal Squad.

One of the assailants detonated himself, according to DFS Inspector Abid Farooq, who was an of of a team of explosives experts examining the attack. The other two were shot dead, he added. But, they were also donning suicide vests, which each weighed about 7-8 kg. Both suicide vests, according to the authority, have been neutralised. Three used or exploding grenade shells and five Russian hand grenade casings were also taken from the scene. Furthermore, ammunition and submachine guns were also seized.

According to the BDS report that Dawn reviewed on Saturday, bomb experts thoroughly searched all of the floors of the KPO building, as well as the roof and parking areas, and found two suicide jackets on the bodies of the terrorists that were “alive condition with complete system, commercial explosives, ball bearings, striker and de-cord in a proper pouch, having weight approximately six to seven kilogrammes of each including all accessories.” On the spot, both jackets were defused.

Five RGD-1 hand grenades that were “misfired” and found in various locations, including the terrorists’ bodies, were also defused. The fourth floor and top of the KPO both had three used stun (flash) grenades that had been collected. Before they visited the KPO, COAS Asim Munir and CM Shah at Corps Headquarters received a briefing on the incident’s results.
