The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has introduced several measures aimed at reducing fuel consumption, including a policy that allows 50 percent of government employees to work from home.
Shafiq Jan, Special Assistant to the Chief Minister on Information, announced that the provincial cabinet has approved a plan titled the Fuel Conservation and Responsible Governance Initiative. He explained that, following directives from the chief minister, the fuel-saving measures will initially remain in place for two months, though they could be extended depending on their effectiveness.
Under the new initiative, all official government meetings will be conducted online instead of in person to limit unnecessary travel. Additionally, fuel allowances for government vehicles will be reduced by 25 percent. This reduction comes on top of an earlier 25 percent cut introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. However, essential departments such as police, rescue services, and other law enforcement agencies will not be affected by these restrictions.
Jan also confirmed that cabinet meetings will now take place virtually as part of the broader effort to conserve fuel and reduce operational costs. The policy further includes measures to limit the unnecessary use of VIP vehicles and helicopters by government officials. Authorities also plan to enforce stricter controls on government spending, including limits on official events, ceremonies, and formal dinners.
The provincial government is also reviewing an additional proposal to close educational institutions on Fridays in order to further decrease fuel consumption related to daily transportation.
Moreover, officials will conduct daily monitoring of petrol stations to prevent fuel hoarding and ensure smooth supply. Special priority will be given to providing diesel for farmers, particularly to support agricultural activities and wheat harvesting operations during the ongoing season.
