In response to the recent surge in terrorist incidents, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has announced plans to hold a “peace jirga” in the provincial assembly.
The jirga will bring together former chief ministers, governors, religious scholars, tribal elders, lawyers, civil society members, and other notable figures to form a joint strategy for peace and counter-terrorism in the province.
Afridi made the announcement during a meeting of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) senior leaders at the CM House in Peshawar, attended by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Asad Qaiser, Junaid Akbar, and others. The meeting reviewed the province’s deteriorating law and order situation and paid tribute to police officials martyred in the recent Hangu bombings.
Afridi reaffirmed his government’s full support for the police force, emphasizing efforts to equip officers with advanced training and modern resources.
The decision follows two deadly blasts in Hangu that targeted police personnel and facilities. The first explosion destroyed a police post in Gulmina, while a second attack struck SP (Operations) Asad Zubair’s vehicle as he responded to the scene, killing him and three officers.
Inspector General Zulfiqar Hameed confirmed an investigation is underway, though no group has claimed responsibility yet.
