The Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has officially called the KP Assembly session on July 20. This move comes just one day before the scheduled Senate elections across the province.
Governor Faisal Karim Kundi approved the summary to summon the provincial legislature. The session will allow 25 members, nominated for reserved seats, to take oath before voting begins for the Senate elections.
The oath-taking had been delayed earlier due to the prorogation of assembly sessions. The upcoming meeting on July 20 is now crucial, as the swearing-in of these members is necessary for their participation in the Senate polls.
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) had released the official schedule for Senate elections in early July. Elections will be held for 11 Senate seats from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. These include seven general seats, two women’s seats, and two technocrat/ulema seats.
Polling is set to take place on July 21, 2025, at the KP Assembly building in Peshawar. The ECP has also announced voting for one additional seat left vacant by Sania Nishtar, a former senator from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
The timing of the KP Assembly session is being seen as an important step to ensure a complete house before the election. This could influence the outcome of the Senate race, particularly if newly sworn-in members shift the balance of voting power.
The political and legal pressure to hold the session increased after repeated delays. The ECP and courts had emphasized the need for fair representation ahead of the Senate vote.
By holding the session on July 20, the province appears to be moving toward compliance with national electoral procedures.
