The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly has formally requested an in-camera briefing from the Peshawar corps commanders office. The briefing aims to review the current security situation and ongoing military operations in the province.

According to the letter issued by KP Assembly Deputy Secretary Tariq Noor, the Special Committee on Security, consisting of over 40 members, has asked for a detailed update from Headquarters XI Corps, Peshawar. The committee includes the leader of the house, the opposition leader, provincial ministers, and parliamentary leaders from various parties.

The request follows briefings already received from key provincial officials, including the chief secretary, additional chief secretary, and the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The committee emphasized the need for a military perspective to complement existing consultations.

The move comes amid heightened security concerns in KP. Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Director-General Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry reported that KP accounted for nearly 71 percent of all terrorist incidents in Pakistan in 2025. The high number of incidents were attributed to a “politically conducive environment and the flourishing political-criminal-terror-nexus” in the province.

Lt. Gen Chaudhry noted that law enforcement agencies conducted 75,175 intelligence-based operations nationwide in 2025. Of these, 14,658 operations took place in KP, highlighting the intensity of counterterrorism efforts in the region. Out of 5,397 terrorism incidents reported across Pakistan last year, 3,811 occurred in KP.

The KP Assembly letter also stressed that while security measures are critical, military action alone might not ensure lasting peace. The Special Committee stated that a broader approach, including political, social, and developmental initiatives, is necessary to stabilize the province and prevent further unrest.

The issue of counterterrorism and military operations has been a point of friction between KP’s provincial government and the federal authorities. The PTI-led provincial government has advocated political dialogue, while the federal government continues active operations against terrorist networks.

By seeking a briefing from the Peshawar corps commanders office, the KP Assembly aims to align political oversight with ongoing security efforts. The committee intends to use the briefing to shape recommendations for effective peacebuilding in the province.

The Special Committee plans to review the briefing in detail and propose measures that combine military action with developmental and political initiatives. Lawmakers believe this approach can reduce tensions and improve stability across KP.

The KP Assembly’s request for a briefing on security matters highlights the ongoing focus on law enforcement in the province. Read more about recent counterterrorism efforts in Security Forces Stop Deadly Terror attack on Bannu Check Post to understand how authorities are maintaining safety.
