The government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has announced a major relief initiative ahead of Ramadan, aiming to support low-income households struggling with rising living costs. Officials described the program as one of the largest welfare interventions in the province’s history, designed to reduce financial pressure during the holy month.
Chief Minister Muhammad Sohail Afridi revealed that more than 1.063 million deserving families will receive direct cash assistance of Rs12,500 each. Authorities say the amount is significantly higher than last year’s Rs10,000 payment and reflects the government’s effort to match current inflation levels.
Provincial officials approved the package during the cabinet’s 47th meeting, emphasizing that soaring prices of essential commodities such as sugar and wheat flour made expanded support unavoidable. They stressed the decision was taken after detailed financial reviews to ensure funds reach vulnerable citizens without delays.
According to the government’s economic spokesperson, the increase in aid demonstrates a commitment to protect disadvantaged groups from the harshest effects of inflation. He added that the relief program is structured to deliver funds efficiently, ensuring families can purchase necessities and maintain stability throughout Ramadan.
Meanwhile, anticipation is building nationwide as astronomers predict the Ramadan crescent moon may be visible on February 18, 2026, following the new moon’s birth a day earlier. Experts say weather conditions and visibility will determine whether the moon can be sighted that evening.
The official confirmation will come after a meeting of the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee scheduled in Peshawar. The announcement will mark not only the beginning of Ramadan but also the rollout of financial assistance expected to bring relief and reassurance to millions across the province.
