Kim Keon Hee, the wife of former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, has been indicted on bribery and related charges. A special prosecution team announced the indictment on Friday as part of a widening investigation into the martial law crisis and political scandals involving the couple.
Kim and Yoon are both in jail. Yoon is on trial for insurrection charges linked to his failed attempt to impose martial law in December. Kim faces allegations including bribery and stock fraud, which could lead to a lengthy prison sentence if proven.
The bribery charges involve accusations that Kim accepted illegal payments from business owners, religious leaders, and political brokers. These allegations have been part of a series of scandals dating back over 15 years that overshadowed Yoon’s presidency.
In a statement, Kim expressed regret for causing public concern. She said she would face the charges without excuses and stay true to her values during the trial.
Kim’s lawyers deny all bribery allegations and say some media reports are based on rumors and speculation. Despite this, the indictment adds to the political pressure on the former first lady and her husband.
Along with Kim, former Prime Minister Han Duck-soo was also indicted on charges related to abetting insurrection and perjury during the martial law crisis. Han was appointed by Yoon and has denied wrongdoing but accepted some responsibility for failing to prevent the crisis.
The investigation continues to unfold as South Korea confronts the fallout from the unprecedented political events. Authorities remain focused on uncovering the full extent of the bribery and other charges.
This case highlights growing concerns about corruption and political accountability in South Korea’s recent history. The legal proceedings are expected to continue for months.
