Kim Jong Un Tests New Air Defense Missiles Ahead Of Trump-Lee Summit

North Korean leader Kim Jong has personally supervised the test firing of two new air defence missiles. State media reported the tests on Sunday, describing the missiles as having “superior combat capability.”

The missile launch took place on Saturday, one day before U.S. President Donald Trump is set to meet South Korea’s new president, Lee Jae-myung, in Washington, DC.

According to the Korean Central News Agency, the missiles showed a quick response to aerial threats like drones and cruise missiles. Officials said the system uses “unique and special technology.” However, no further technical details or the test location were revealed.

This missile test adds to a series of recent military actions by North Korea amid rising tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

The launch occurred during the annual joint military drills between the U.S. and South Korea. Earlier this week, South Korean forces fired warning shots after about 30 North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the heavily guarded border, according to the United Nations Command.

North Korean media quoted Army Lieutenant General Ko Jong Chol, who called the border crossing a “premeditated and deliberate provocation.” He warned that such acts could push the situation into an “uncontrollable phase.”

South Korea’s new President Lee Jae-myung has promised warmer relations and increased military trust with Pyongyang. However, despite these efforts, North Korea has dismissed the idea of improved ties and insists it will continue strengthening its military power.

The recent missile tests under Kim Jong show Pyongyang’s continued focus on military readiness as diplomatic talks approach.
