The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has ordered the closure of all colleges and universities in the province’s winter zone. This closure will last from August 19 to August 25, 2025. The decision comes as heavy rains, cloudbursts, and possible landslides threaten the region.
Authorities aim to protect students, teachers, and staff from potential dangers caused by extreme weather. Officials warned that flash floods and landslides could affect many areas in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
The Higher Education Department has advised institutions to use online classes during the closure. This step will help continue education despite campus shutdowns.
Meanwhile, the heavy rain has also hit Rawalakot in Azad Kashmir. Many roads are damaged by landslides, forcing school closures until August 23. The rain has severely disrupted daily life and travel in the area.
Monsoon rains have caused widespread destruction in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), over 325 people have died and more than 150 have been injured. Thousands of homes have been damaged or destroyed, and many people were evacuated.
Buner is the hardest-hit district, with 217 deaths reported. Other affected districts include Swat, Bajaur, Mansehra, Shangla, and Battagram. Rescue teams continue to clear roads and assist displaced families.
Flood levels in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa rivers are rising. For example, the Jindi River in Charsadda is experiencing a low-level flood, while the Naranji Nallah in Swabi faces a medium-level flood. Authorities remain vigilant as the monsoon season continues.
