Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has acknowledged that protesters raising economic grievances are making “fair” demands, reflecting deep public frustration. In a recent address, Khamenei said rising inflation, unemployment, and declining purchasing power have created serious difficulties for ordinary Iranians nationwide.
He stressed that economic pressure on households is real and cannot be dismissed, urging state institutions to recognize people’s struggles sincerely. The supreme leader emphasized that officials must improve governance, fight corruption, and manage resources better to ease the economic burden. Khamenei differentiated between peaceful protests over livelihoods and actions he claimed are driven by foreign interference or attempts to destabilize Iran.
He warned that while economic criticism is justified, violence and unrest only harm national stability and delay solutions to public problems.
Iran has witnessed repeated waves of protests over recent years, largely triggered by soaring prices, currency depreciation, and reduced job opportunities.
Many Iranians say wages have failed to keep pace with inflation, making basic necessities such as food, housing, and healthcare increasingly unaffordable. International sanctions have also played a significant role in Iran’s economic troubles, limiting trade, investment, and access to global financial systems.
Despite these challenges, Khamenei said internal mismanagement and weak oversight have worsened conditions, suggesting reforms must start within the country. He called on government leaders to listen more closely to public concerns and deliver tangible improvements rather than empty promises.
The comments come at a sensitive time, as authorities face pressure to balance maintaining order with responding to widespread economic dissatisfaction. Observers say acknowledging protesters’ demands as “fair” is notable, as Iranian leadership has often taken a harsher tone toward demonstrations.
